Ecopainting paves the way for women painters in Toronto

12 Feb, 2018 – It’s not common to see women painters around town. But the one thing you’d notice at Eco Painting is the fact there are women painters who are crew leaders and supervisors.

In a country where less women represent less than 30% of the work force in non-traditional careers such as agriculture and technology, it’s really rare to see women donning the role of professional painters.

Typically factors such as lack of awareness of these career options and fear of the workplace culture often drives women away from pursuing these roles.

But the management at Eco Painting clarified that their focus towards employee wellness and a fair policy at the work place, everyone is welcome to join their team.

According to the Canadian Construction Association, the construction industry employs close to one million Canadians and is responsible for about $123 billion in economic activity annually. The opportunity is certainly there for women to enter the trades.

The Canadian Association of Women in Construction is a group working hard to help women succeed in the Canadian construction industry. Ecopainting is represented in CAWIC.

George Zarogiannis, the President of Ecopainting Inc. was interviewed about this issue in an industry blog in 2009.

Speaking about the matter George says “Most of our customers don’t really think much of it. There is the occasional person that will see the novelty of having a woman painter, but the majority of people’s opinion is really a reflection of society’s in general. A painter is a painter.”

George also stated that “If a woman is to succeed in a non-traditional career, it would be helpful if the working conditions and work environment are more conducive. Preferential treatment is not necessary, but there are some needs and considerations. Good pay, good and safe working conditions, fully paid benefits, job security, training, opportunities for advancement etc”

At Ecopainting, safety comes first, always. As painting contractors, we are aware there are a number of safety issues that all our painters need to be aware of. By addressing these concerns at the workplace, men and women feel safe and motivated to function efficiently.
